What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing support for Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability where it affects their ability to take part in everyday activities.
The aim of the NDIS is to provide access to reasonable and necessary supports that people with a disability need to live an ordinary life. Once participants have a plan they can choose service providers that suit them from a list of NDIS registered providers in their area.
Taking a lifetime approach, the idea is to invest early in people with a disability to improve their outcomes later in life. A key result of this will be enhanced participation in the community and employment due to building skills and capability.
Providing choice and control, the NDIS gives people with a disability the power to choose how, when and where support services are provided.
The NDIS gives you more choice and control over how, when and where your support services are provided, and gives you certainty you will receive the support you need over your lifetime.
NDIS Eligibility
People who meet the following criteria may be able to access the NDIS:
- Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities

NDIS assistance does not get means tested and it has no impact on income support such as the Disability Support Pension or Carers Allowance.
